Probation
What is a probationary period?
This is a period of time for the University to assess the performance, conduct and attendance of each new staff member in a fair and consistent manner. It also gives the new member of staff the support, encouragement, training and guidance they need.
Length of probationary period
Jobs in the Education & Research job family:
- Research staff: 6 months
- Teaching Fellows: 1 year
- Lecturers; 3 years
- Senior Lecturer/Reader/Professor: no probationary period
Jobs in all other job families:
- Jobs in Grades 1-9: 6 months
- Senior Professional Staff: 1 year

There are specific probationary processes for Lecturers and Teaching Fellows.
