Lecturers on probation

Below are the key features of probation process for Lecturers, as outlined in the Career Progression framework document.

Probation reviews

During your 3 year probationary period, progress on research, teaching and administration/management duties is reviewed annually by the Academic Staff Committee. This review is based on a joint report from you the probationary lecturer, your Head of Department/Division and the Dean. This procedure is managed by the HR Manager (Academic Staff Committee).

Professional development

To help you develop and enhance your skills in academic practice we require all probationary lecturers to successfully complete the Bath Course in Enhancing Academic Practice (known as the 'Bath Course') which is run by the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office.

To allow you to develop your independent research whilst on probation, and to facilitate your completion of the Bath Course you will receive a reduction of 80 hours in your workload during your probationary period.

Accreditation of Prior/Experiential Learning (APEL) may be available to individual probationers based on relevant previous qualifications or experience for some parts of the Bath Course.


Your Head of Department/Division will allocate a more experienced member of staff to act as your mentor. Guidance notes are available on the role of mentors.


Lecturers who have yet to complete their formal education on appointment (e.g. PhD) will be placed on 'pre-probation' for up to one year to complete their qualification, and will then proceed to probation. Pre-probationary lecturers are required to complete part of the Bath Course.

Exemption from probation

If you can provide documentary evidence of either the successful completion of probation of a comparable nature in a comparable institution or of having gained equivalent experience, you may - at the University's discretion - be granted exemption from probation.

Claims for exemption from probation must be made initially to the Head of Academic Staff Development.

Principles of research assessment and management

The University has developed a set of principles outlining its approach to research assessment and management, including the responsible use of quantitative indicators. The assessment of academic probation cases by Academic Staff Committee and its related Sub Groups will be made in accordance with these principles.
