Lecturers on probation

Review process

During the three year probationary period progress on research, teaching and any management duties is reviewed annually by the Academic Staff Committee.  This review is based on a joint report from the probationary lecturer, Head of Department and the Dean. This process is managed by the HR Manager (Academic Staff Committee).

The Head of Department will meet with the new lecturer soon after appointment to agree objectives for the probationary period.

Bath Course in Enhancing Academic Practice

All probationary lecturers are required, as a condition of their probation, to successfully complete the Bath Course in Enhancing Academic Practice (known as the 'Bath Course') which is run by the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office to support early career academic staff. The Bath Course webpages provide details of the sections of the course to be completed and the timetable for these as well as information about any exemptions which may be available to individual probationers based on relevant previous qualifications or experience. Claims for exemption from sections of the Bath Course must be made to the Course Director. Until a decision has been made on any claim for exemption you will be registered on the Bath Course.

Mentoring

Head of Department will allocate a more experienced member of staff to act as a mentor to each new lecturer. Guidance notes are available on the role of mentors.

Pre-probation

Lecturers who have yet to complete their formal education on appointment (e.g.PhD) will be placed on 'pre-probation' for up to one year and will then proceed to probation.

Exemption from probation

If you can provide documentary evidence of either the successful completion of probation of a comparable nature in a comparable institution or of having gained equivalent experience, you may -  at the University's discretion -  be granted exemption from probation.

Claims for exemption must be made via the HR Manager (Academic Staff Committee) and will be considered by the Exemption Sub Group of Academic Staff Committee.
