What do we expect from Placement Providers?

Key elements

We believe a good placement should include the following elements:

  • Provide opportunities for learning, mainly practical, but also academic and social.
  • Enable the student to assume an appropriate degree of responsibility.
  • Maximise the student’s contribution to the organisation or department.

Supervision

Adequate supervision is a critical factor in the success of any placement. We ask that placement providers:

  • Integrate the student into their project or team
  • Facilitate contacts with other colleagues
  • Arrange regular meetings with the student
  • Outline expectations and a work programme

Ideally a student would be assigned to a supervisor for the duration of the placement, someone who can discuss the work programme, work expectations, monitor day-to-day progress and provide advice and guidance where necessary.

Support with student dissertation

We also would wish the placement provider to advise and offer guidance to the student for their dissertation and discuss logistical or ethical issues, and feasibility of the topic. The discussion of a work programme and the appointment of a daily supervisor, who may be another person in the team other than the director, ensures that, from the outset, both student and placement provider are clear as to the content and objectives of the placement.
