National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)
Extended Daily Fasting (Omission of Breakfast) and the Regulation of Energy Balance
To volunteer contact: j.d.richardson@bath.ac.uk
A combined cross-over experiment and randomised group comparison to investigate the causal mechanisms through which daily breakfast consumption may be related to appetite, physical activity, glycaemic control, tissue-specific insulin signalling and chronic low-grade systemic inflammation. Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
PPACTE - Pricing Policies and Control of NRACCO in Europe as representative of our influence on Europe A major collaborative project involving eight research partners. Bath leads the work package examining tobacco industry pricing strategies and influence on policy in Europe. European Commission Seventh Framework Programme (FP7)
Can Exercise Overcome the Effects of Short-Term Overfeeding and Restricted Physical Activity on Inflammatory Markers and Metabolic Function?
To volunteer contact: j.walhin@bath.ac.uk
A randomised group comparison to determine whether a structured exercise program can overcome the negative metabolic and inflammatory consequences of 7 days excessive dietary energy intake and restricted energy expenditure with a matched energy surplus between treatments.
The Effect of Mixed Macronutrient Ingestion on Systemic Inflammation and the Expression of Metabolic Genes in Skeletal Muscle A randomised cross-over experiment into the effect of ingesting carbohydrate with added amino acids on the inflammatory response to repeated exercise bouts and alterations in metabolic signalling within skeletal muscle during recovery. Glaxosmithkline
Macronutrient Ingestion, Muscle Glycogen & Post-Exercise Recovery
To volunteer contact: a.f.alghannam@bath.ac.uk
A randomised cross-over experiment to examine the inter-relationships between ingesting various quantities of carbohydrate with and without added amino acids, muscle glycogen availability and the capacity to perform repeated bouts of exercise with limited recovery. Saudi Arabian HE Authority

Psychology

Project title Aim/findings People and Partners Funder
Developing educational software to assess if autistic children can benefit from access to open learner models and emotional feedback on learning Research aims to design, construct and evaluate educational software to investigate if children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can benefit from access to their open learner models (OLMs), and emotional feedback on their learning achievements. Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
Habit Discontinuity It is extremely difficult to persuade people to adopt more sustainable lifestyles. This project tests the hypothesis that such interventions are more successful if these are delivered in the context of a life-course change, in this case moving house. The project involves a field experiment in Peterborough. Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC)
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)

Department for International Development (DIFD)
Dynamic and Complex Social Systems The research draws on two principal literatures.
One is complexity science, applying to the social sciences insights and methods that have been developed largely in relation to physical and biological processes. The second is institutionalism.
This project brings these together, in a conceptually coherent and methodologically novel synthesis.
Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC)
The Future Cemetery Project The project is an immersive, multi-media audience experience that engages heritage site cemetery visitors with the UK's dynamic postmortem past. This entire project builds a future cemetery model, where both the Victorian past and the digital present are woven together in order to create a new kind of postmortem space.
The key outcome will be the development of a prototype technology which other Heritage site cemeteries (and Heritage sites, writ large) can also use. The REACT Sandbox funding focuses on R&D and then bringing new technologies to market.
