Knowledge Exchange Forum makes Feasibility Awards for engaging with research users

Three Impact Acceleration Account awards have been made by the University’s Knowledge Exchange Forum to encourage pathways to impact.

Professor James Davenport and Dr Matthew England, Department of Computer Science, have been awarded funding to develop links with the Maplesoft UK Reseller and its industry customers. This will aid understanding of the users’ requirements and how Bath research can help through integration into the Maplesoft computer algebra system.

Dr Sukumar Natarajan, Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, Dr Ian Walker, Department of Psychology, and Professor Eamonn O’Neill, Department of Computer Science, have been awarded funding for gamification to achieve knowledge exchange on domestic energy use. The games will be used to both measure and increase people’s energy literacy by testing their current knowledge and educating them about energy use in an engaging and fun manner.

Dr Michael Proulx, Department of Psychology, was awarded funding for developing a game version of an app for blind end-users that translates images into sounds so they can 'see' with their ears. This game version will appeal to both sighted and visually impaired users, further promoting the research and the app and improving public understanding of sensory substitution devices.

Professor Chris Frost, Chair of the KE Forum, stated that 'Engaging with end users to understand their requirements can help us to present our research to them in more innovative and attractive ways, such as through the development of games or tools that they need.'

The KE Forum is seeking applications from EPSRC current and recent award-holders, for the next deadline of Friday noon, 6th September 2013, and would particularly like to encourage applications for exchanges of staff between the University and non-academic external organisations.

There are also Travel Awards available for visits to build new links with external organisations.

Please note that this IAA fund is not an alternative to costing activities into RCUK pathways to impact plans.
