Alexander Balanescu’s personal homage to the legendary Romanian diva Maria Tănase was performed for the ICIA. Emerging from Balanescu’s interest in mixed-media performance, this work was conceived and developed as a multi-media experience in collaboration with acclaimed Austrian video artist Klaus Obermaier. The two created a live show with footage from Maria Maria Tănase’s live concerts, archive recordings of her songs, and images from Romania’s history. Balanescu and Obermaier developed, re-imagined and manipulated these materials into a work consisting of live music, archive sounds and video projections.
