Cheng Yu – Chinese Pipa & Guqin

Thurs 17 Feb – University Hall Music Room

Cheng Yu is an award-winning soloist with the China Central Orchestra of Chinese Music. Now based in the UK, Yu is the founder of The Chinese Music Ensemble, combining a busy career recording and touring worldwide with teaching and research at the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

This concert was an opportunity to hear works for pipa and guqin, ranging from the 15th to the 21st Century. Pipa is a four stringed instrument closely resembling the western lute both in shape and the technique applied to the instrument. The guqin is an unfretted zither with seven strings, placed face up on a table or in the performers lap, resonating with lap steel guitar.
