Darkin Ensemble took us to underground Paris. It’s 1890 and a mysterious outbreak of hysteria is sweeping the city. At Paris’ notorious asylum, La Salpetriere, 4000 patients are treated by the world’s greatest living doctor. He studies bodies to discover a new science of the mind. She is his favourite case, admitted to the asylum for attacks of severe hysteria. Her name is Augustine. She is fifteen.
Fleur Darkin, Jerwood nominated choreographer, established her ensemble in 2003 to push the boundaries between dance, theatre and new writing to tell striking stories. Through beautiful, intricate choreography, the Darkin Ensemble uses the dynamism and immediacy of the body to create a compelling new physical language.
An ICIA commission.
