Drawing

*COURSE FULL - Please ring the box office to go on the waiting list (01225 386777)*

Enrich your drawing experience and improve your drawing in a fun and experimental way with a variety of materials and techniques. Each week will introduce you to a different drawing approach in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. With an emphasis on process and tips, advice will be given to encourage you to develop your confidence in your drawing ability. Drawing from observation and from your imagination, both traditional and unusual techniques will be used to explore the material qualities of pencils, graphite powder, charcoal, ink, and wax.

The sessions will be divided into two parts: an introduction to the drawing approach with tasters and examples of artist’s work and an opportunity for reflection and discussion. This will be followed by a more extended study using the learned techniques. You may be asked to bring in an object of your choice to draw. By the end of the course your portfolio will be brimming with images and examples of new approaches to mark making and ways of observing that can be used in your future drawing and painting. You should be refreshed with ideas and have a renewed joy for drawing.

Suitable for all; beginners are welcome. If you are one of those individuals who thinks they can’t draw, but would like to try something new or you’re someone who is looking for new approaches to drawing... then this course is for you!

Observations in Painting

A platform for you to think and act like a traveller (The Art of Travel, Alain de Botton)

A six week course (plus Saturday workshop) that is designed to take students of all abilities on a voyage of discovery, stimulating their imagination, enhancing their skills and providing a platform for experimentation within art. Particpants will learn about paint; colour and light; shape and line; pattern and form; space and scale; and illusion, allusion and expression within the two-dimensional arena. Media will include drawing, painting, printing, collage (plus a mixture of found objects), photography, film and digital. The course will involve group and individual tuition.

When we go somewhere new, we tend to be more aware of our surroundings. We notice more. We look more closely. We explore. And more often than not, we leave with a memory, or a souvenir of our adventure, typically in the form of a photo or maybe even a drawing. Often we use the opening for pause and reflection, take in the change of scene and enjoy the experience and our surroundings. Why not at the ICIA?

Each week will be split into two slots with a small break in-between. The first period will be focused on a collective, hands-on experience, being introduced or re-introduced to one of the named mediums detailed above, and qualities of the two-dimensional arena. In the second half, individuals will be encouraged to springboard and experiment one their own with the mediums, approaches and qualities that have been addressed. Allowing personal development and individual practice to run alongside the re-invigorating of skills and group experimentation. The final Saturday will be a day workshop bringing together all interchangeable elements learned over the previous six weeks with chances for group, indiviudal and one-two-one tutoring.

Artist/Tutor: Alex Roberts studied at City of Bath Art College and Reading University before completing a further diploma at the London College of Printing. Roberts is an accomplished artist working predominantly with paint, whilst she also explores other media such as film and installation.

Photographing People

COURSE FULL - Please phone the box office on 01225 386777 to go on the waiting list

We are all photographers now

The course will look at how best to make images of your friends and family. Over six evenings the course begins with a short reminder about how the camera 'thinks' and a brief look at the self-portrait. We then continue to consider the individual head and shoulder type of image, plus any effect of emotions and state of mind. The plan is also to have some fun with the pose and some make believe, all whilst remembering the effects of depth of field and focal lengths. Later on we look at how best to depict the complete person in an environment as well as the group portrait.

With a relaxed mix of investigation and practice, the aim is to improve whatever your starting point, this in regard to your technique as well as composition. The intention is to be of interest to all abilities so do join us with your camera (any camera) and develop your skills.

Artist/Tutor: Originally from Oslo Norway, Toril Brancher lives and works in South Wales. She studied at University Wales Newport and now teaches the Photographing People course for Ffotogallery in Cardiff. She is also teaching an introductory course in photography at Arts Alive Wales. Toril is currently working on a commission by the Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea, which takes as a starting point the work of painter Glenys Cour.

Documentary Photography

Over the course of 10 weeks, students will be presented with a host of photographic documentary projects, ranging in styles from traditional practice to conceptual and artistic endeavours. Participants will be challenged to explore their understanding of what makes a photograph be documentary in nature, as well as how to broaden the scope of their own photographic practice. The various sessions will be comprised of presentations of key photo-documentary projects, in conjunction with group discussions of the various elements of the projects. Participants will also undertake personal photographic projects that will be presented for group discussions and critique.

This course will be suitable for beginners to intermediate level photographers. Participants are invited to utilise any and all types of camera equipment with which they are comfortable and able to provide, but a digital camera (preferably a digital compact camera or DSLR) is suggested. Particpiants will also need access to some sort of portable memory (i.e. USB flashdrive) to bring projects to the weekly sessions.

Art & the Public Realm

Commissioning in a heritage context

Bath is an historic city, with UNESCO status, and as such highly protected in terms of its spaces and what may or may not be posited in the public realm. This course examines the role of artists in commissioning within public space, a brief history on the field of public art, with a special focus on works produced in a historic setting. These projects, presented as case studies, would show how artists can actively engage with the built environment, through temp, perm and integrated interventions and with a sensitivity to site. The course would also feature a workshop element where sites are chosen in Bath, and ideas for public art interventions (designs) tested and critiqued in a group session. The course would consider the work of art outside of the traditional gallery or museum context and how to commission in even the most protected locations.

Tutor: Aldo Rinaldi is a curator and commissioner based in Bristol. He is currently the Senior Public Art Officer for the City of Bristol where he oversees the ongoing strategic development of public art across the City, implementing Bristol City Council’s Public Art Policy, and delivering a number of public art projects across the City, through strategic and collaborative working, with a range of public and private sector partners. Prior to working in Bristol he worked at a CBAT and SAFLE, a commissioning agency based in Cardiff, from 2003-07 where he produced a number of projects with artists from the UK and abroad. He was Assistant Director of Laurent Delaye Gallery, London from 2002-03 and has worked for over 12 years on a range of contemporary art projects in both galleries and the public realm. Current projects include new commissions by Tue Greenfort, Roger Hiorns, Mark Titchner, Simon and Tom Bloor, Sabine Hornig, Maria Thereza Alves, N55 and Martin Parr. He is working on a new book on the work of Roger Hiorns (2012/13) and a forthcoming exhibition with Scottish artist, Katie Paterson in 2013/14. For further info see: www.aprb.co.uk

International Collaborative Drawing Project

Explore the surprising creative world of the International Collaborative Drawing Project. Started by artist Ivan Liotchev in 2010 in the artistic hub of Peckham, South London, the project has since travelled to diverse communities throughout the UK and abroad. Always unpredictable due to the creative individuality of each participant and his/her given community, the project embraces drawing’s universal reach as both a uniting force and a way to explore the breadth of drawing approaches throughout the world.

This course invites you to take part in the creation of a very large-scale collaborative drawing using hundreds of marker pens on canvas. The primary objective is to have fun exploring our own personal approaches to drawing. There will be no pre-conceptions as to what drawing is, you will be free to draw whatever and however you like, using your personal experience as a tool for unlocking creativity. After 6 classes, the result will be a dazzling tapestrial canvas filled with everyone’s unique contributions. You will have the option to sign a contract offering you a share of the future market value of the finished work. To supplement our awareness of the possibilities of collaboration, Ivan Liotchev will lead several talks, experiments and discussions, considering collaborative works by artists including Judy Chicago, Alighiero Boetti, Tim Rollins and KOS, and Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Artist: Ivan Liotchev is an artist currently based in Manchester. Holding an MFA from the Slade School of Art, London and a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, USA, he has exhibited widely across the UK, USA, Bulgaria and Turkey. As a painter he is concerned with the continued relevance of current painting in a technology dominated world. His International Collaborative Drawing Project started in South London in 2010 and continues to expand internationally, inviting the efforts of diverse communities throughout the world, using collaboration as an instrument for discovery.
