Materials for Visual Art Classes
Free materials for weekly classes are ONLY available to University of Bath students unless otherwise stated.
Materials for workshops are included in the price, but you may be asked to bring a key piece of equipment with you (e.g. camera), please check the list below.
The materials listed below are required for the first session only - further advice and information about materials will be given by the tutor. As your work develops the tutor may suggest additional materials or equipment specifically for you. This will depend on how your work develops.
Weekly classes
Photographing People
- Camera required, any type
- You may find it useful to bring a small sketch/note book and pen
Creative Writing
- Please bring a small sketch/note book and pen
Exploring Photography
- Camera required (preferably digital compact or SLR)
- You may find it useful to bring a small sketch/note book and pen
Documentary Photography
- Digital camera (preferably a digital compact camera or DSLR) is suggested
- Participants will also need access to some sort of portable memory (i.e. USB flashdrive) to bring projects to the weekly sessions
International Collaborative Drawing Project
- N/A - materials provided
Art & the Public Realm
- Please bring a small note book and pen
- We will email participants if anything else is required before the course starts
Life Drawing
- Five sheets of inexpensive cartridge paper (A2 size)
- B & 4B pencils
- Putty rubber
- Masking tape
- Fixative (or hairspray)
- A box of charcoal (scene painters, medium or assorted)
Social Art Drop-in
- Bring whatever you’re working on; and a mixture of papers, pencils and paints
- You will be able to sample different mediums during the sessions as your work progresses
Making & Unmaking
- Participants should ideally have their own practice with access to their own tools and equipment
- We will email participants if anything specific is required before the course starts
Drawing
- A few sheets of A3/A2 sized cartridge paper
- A small variety of pencils
- Putty rubber
- Charcoal & white chalk (or pastel)
- fixative (or hairspray)
Observations in Painting
- If you have one a camera; any type
- Sketchbook A3 (cartridge paper)
- A small selection of pencils
- We will email participants if anything else is required before the course starts
One-off weekend workshops
Secret Sounds
- We will email participants if anything is required in advance
Travels in Textiles
- It is recommended that you bring some copies of photos, paper items, maps and brochures from the place you are using as your theme and any old domestic (not valuable) fabrics or scraps that can be recycled in your piece. Any poems or words that express the feeling of your place would also be useful.
Mixed Media Landscapes
- We will email participants if anything is required in advance
Reading the City
- Please bring a pen, paper and a camera phone if you have one or a digital camera for visual note making
