Môr Plastig is welsh for ‘Plastic Sea’ and is a series of still life colour photographs of plastic detritus. For Mike Perry’s exhibition at ICIA, he continues his fascination with objects that have been washed up on the coastline of West Wales and beyond.
At a glance, the photographed objects, whether bottles, shoes, gloves or flip flops, are hard to define from their original purpose. They have seemingly become objects of aesthetic beauty in Perry’s photographs, where he has captured an almost scientific and forensic quality.
Although Perry’s photographs are a definite nod to the environmental impact for the future and that of the past, Môr Plastig is placed in a larger narrative, where the photographs encourage the viewer’s own interpretation, bringing forward questions of mass production of plastic objects and the personal qualities of the shoes or flip flops; where have they come from? Who has worn them? What journey have they been on?
Mike Perry has exhibited nationally and internationally and is represented by The Photographers’ Gallery, London. In 2012, Môr Plastig was selected for The Oriel Davies Open and his semi abstract studies of Gorse were included in the exhibition New Ground: Landscape Art In Wales since 1970, curated by The Museum Of Wales.
