University of Bath Arts & Media Awards 2010

Monday 19 April, Claverton Rooms, University of Bath

The University celebrated its vibrant arts and media scene at the annual Arts & Media Awards in the University's Claverton Rooms. The evening was introduced by Vice-Chancellor Professor Glynis Breakwell and twelve students were delighted to receive awards before more than 160 guests.

Of the awards presented on the evening, six were donated by long-standing supporters of the arts at the University, while eight were supported by one of the University's major corporate partners, the international bank Santander. These awards, presented by the Director of Santander Universities UK, Luis Juste, celebrated 'outstanding achievement in the field of arts and media'. The evening also featured performances and demonstrations by several Students’ Union arts and media societies including the Chamber Choir and the University’s student radio station.

Those attending the celebrations included the University's Chancellor, Lord Tugendhat, who presented the Marjorie VandeLinde Prize, as well as key members of University staff, representatives from the Students' Union and a number of prize-funders.

The Vice-Chancellor commented that the event "celebrates not only the high standards achieved by our award winners, but also their contribution to the University's vibrant arts and media scene. Our students are among the academic elite, but they are more than just that: they are distinguished by their quality as 'all-rounders', excelling in sports and the arts."

John Struthers, Director of the Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts (ICIA) at the University, added: "The arts can simply provide pleasure and entertain, they can also provide opportunities for students to interact and work together to achieve goals, allow people to experiment with new ideas and provide students with a range of skills that will serve them well whatever they decide to do with the rest of their lives. This University leads the field nationally with the opportunities that we are able to offer and the achievements of the students that have won awards tonight are really something to celebrate."

The prize winners are as follows:

MARJORIE VANDELINDE PRIZE:
Ann Howell, BSc (hons) Physics, Dept of Physics

This award identifies the student who has shown not only commitment and development in one or more areas of arts activity but has also encouraged and facilitated the participation of others. They will have been responsible, through their openness, hard work and encouragement, for the participation of large numbers of other students across more than one art form.

Now in her final year, Ann has been committed to the arts, particularly through her involvement with the Choral & Orchestral Society (ChAOS) throughout her degree. A keen and accomplished flautist, Ann plays in a range of University ensembles including Orchestra and Concert Band, and in the 2008/09 academic year served the position of Orchestra Manager – helping to arrange concerts and rehearsals and being the point of contact for members of the group as well as representing the ensemble to the wider University community. She has also been instrumental in the establishment and development of the Gospel, Acapela, Soul & Pop choir (GASP), leading the group to victory in the choral section of the Mid-Somerset Festival in March 2009. She has dedicated her obvious passion and overwhelming energy this year to the role of Arts Officer, which included supporting the arts societies at the annual Arts & Media Day (part of Freshers' Week) and coordinating the Show in a Week event, a sell-out success. She has all the attributes to make her a worthy winner of this award.
