Press Release:
University of Bath
Arts & Media Awards 2013
Wednesday 24 April, University Hall, University of Bath
The University of Bath celebrated its vibrant arts and media scene at the annual Arts & Media Awards on its Claverton Down campus on Wednesday. The evening was introduced by Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell DBE DL, Vice-Chancellor, and fourteen students were delighted to receive awards before more than 150 guests.
Of the awards presented on the evening, six were donated by long-standing supporters of the arts at the University, while eight were supported by one of the University’s major corporate partners, Santander. These awards, presented by Matt Huttnell from Santander Universities, celebrated ‘outstanding achievement in the field of arts and media’. The evening also featured performances and presentations by students across a variety of arts and media-related disciplines.
Those attending the celebrations included The Deputy Mayor of Bath, Councillor Dine Romero, as well as key members of University staff, Students' Union members and a number of prize-funders.
The Vice-Chancellor commented: “Our students are very talented young people, fulfilling their potential academically and creatively, and we congratulate them all on their success”.
John Struthers, Director of the Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts (ICIA) at the University, added: "The arts can simply provide pleasure and entertain, they can also provide opportunities for students to interact and work together to achieve goals, allow people to experiment with new ideas and provide students with a range of skills that will serve them well whatever they decide to do with the rest of their lives. This University leads the field nationally with the opportunities that we are able to offer and the achievements of the students that have won awards tonight are really something to celebrate."
The prize winners were as follows:
MARJORIE VANDELINDE PRIZE:
Jemma Jeanes, PoLIS Department, Reading Politics and International Relations BSc
This award identifies the student who has shown not only commitment and development in one or more areas of arts activity but has also encouraged and facilitated the participation of others. They will have been responsible, through their openness, hard work and encouragement, for the participation of large numbers of other students across more than one art form.
Unusually for this award, we are nominating a student in only their second year of study. Since her arrival at the University in 2011, Jemma has jumped headfirst into all aspects of the arts, using her considerable prior experience of producing, directing, stage managing and performing in plays and musicals to drive up the standard and quality of the work produced by many of the performing arts societies here at Bath.
From directing BUSMS’s (Student Musicals Society) production of Fame in 2012, to coordinating the complex technical operation for BodySoc’s (dance society) annual showcase in 2013, Jemma has made a massive contribution in all areas, and has invested huge amounts of time and effort in passing on her knowledge and expertise to fellow students. She commands a great deal of respect from her peers and frequently manages large teams of students to great effect to produce desired results.
This year, she has taken on the role of Arts Rep within the Societies Executive Committee, through which she has successfully encouraged and inspired large numbers of students to engage with arts activities on campus. She has also worked closely with ICIA staff and helped to communicate messages regarding the University’s new Centre for the Arts to the student body.
