"World-leading research in engineering design and manufacturing"
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) supported Bath Innovative Design and Manufacturing Research Centre (IdMRC) is located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Bath. The Centre is unique in the UK in its emphasis on research in both design and manufacture, based on long-established research strengths in machine design and design information systems, and in manufacturing processes and systems. The Centre has a strong portfolio of research in design and manufacture and their interface, supported by a well-equipped laboratory and with a particular emphasis on the development of techniques and methodology. The Centre's work is widely supported by industry, especially from the aerospace and packaging sectors and with emerging strengths in shoe and electronics manufacture. In modern manufacturing the definition, manufacture and verification of the product are intimately interlinked, and each aspect must be undertaken in full recognition of the importance of the other two. The IdMRC's research programme reflects this importance, with research themes in advanced machining processes and systems, in constraint-based design and optimisation, in design information and knowledge, and in metrology and assembly systems and technologies.
