Research Themes
Metrology & Assembly Systems & Technologies
Introduction
The MAST theme of the IdMRC covers metrology and assembly technologies and systems and deals with their integration, modelling and optimisation in advanced digital testing and verification environments. This theme is especially focused on both complex and large-volume applications, typical of the aerospace, power generation and marine industries. It is supported by a metrology laboratory equipped with the most advanced indoor 3D GPS metrology systems.
The MAST programme builds upon work to integrate laser scan and CMM data in high-precision reverse engineering and on projects with EADS Astrium linking design, tolerance analysis, process planning, digital assembly and laser metrology from the early stages of product development. Current research is exploring large-volume metrology within manufacturing and assembly processes, including the evolution of design and manufacturing engineering for large products and the embedding of large-volume metrology process models in advanced digital environments. The work will contribute to standards and metrology-driven automation.
