IMI launches the GW4 Workshop Series on Data Intensive Research

23 May 2017

On Tuesday 16 May, the IMI welcomed colleagues from the universities of Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter and UWE to the first of four Data Intensive Research workshops supported by the GW4 Alliance.

IMI launches the GW4 Workshop Series on Data Intensive ResearchDuring the day, around 30 presentations showcased the wide variety of data intensive research that is carried out across the University of Bath’s three Faculties and the School of Management.

The ‘Famous for 3 minutes’ session in the morning gave 16 Bath researchers an opportunity to introduce themselves and their research, allowing conversations to continue and develop over lunch.

After a tour of the CAMERA motion capture studio, the afternoon session focussed on the ‘creative industries’, from ballet to anthropology to computer graphics, with presentations from several of the visiting participants as well as locals.

Developing a more coherent research community in data science

The ambition of the series of four workshops, with the other three taking place between 22 May and 15 June, is to develop a more coherent research community in data science and related disciplines, across the South West and South Wales region. It will also provide an opportunity to learn about the various new Research Institutes being established, and share ideas on teaching practice and research management.

Stephen Fairhurst, Director of Cardiff’s Data Innovation Research Institute, has described the regions’ potential to become a data science and innovation powerhouse in the recently published article ’Data Science and Innovation: Making the most of our regional expertise’.

Details of the four Data Intensive Research workshops are available on the IMI Events page.
