Summary notes of the Executive Committee held on 10 Mayl 2006
- Proposed Re-structuring of the Department of Human Resources
The Director of Human Resources briefed the Committee on her proposals to re-structure the HR Department. It was proposed that the department should be re-organised along faculty/department lines with a single point of contact for all HR matters. The aim of the re-structuring was to create a more responsive and professional HR service.
- Naming Policy: Quayle Chair in Biosciences
The Vice-Chancellor reminded the Committee that it was the authorising group for, inter alia, ‘named' Chairs, facilities and buildings. Accordingly, she invited the Committee to approve the ‘Quayle Chair of Biosciences' in honour of the former Vice-Chancellor, Rodney Quayle, who had recently passed away. Professor Lunt reported that he had broached the subject with Professor Quayle's widow, Yvonne Quayle, who had been supportive of the proposal.
Proposal for changes to the membership of the University Research Committee
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) explained that all of the existing members of the Research Committee had been appointed for three years. The recent resignations of Professors Jennison and Millar had provided the opportunity to consider some new appointments and the extension of some existing appointments. Professor Edge explained that the intention was not to attempt to represent all of the University's discipline areas but to: (i) retain knowledge built up through the RAE dry run; and (ii) strengthen the academic membership.
- RCUK Academic Fellowships
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) reported that all but one of the applications submitted by the University were successful in the latest round of RCUK Academic Fellowships. The nine new Fellowships are spread across a number of departments as follows:
Partial Differential Equations (2): Mathematical Sciences
Post-Genomic Biosciences (1): Biology and Biochemistry and Pharmacy and Pharmacology
Innovative Product Development (3): Mechanical Engineering
Chemistry for Sustainable Low Carbon Future (2): Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
Innovating for Everyday Death Practices (1): Social and Policy Sciences.
A total of £1,125,000 would be made available for salary support over a period of five years, with the Fellowships commencing in either October 2006 or October 2007. This total allocation meant that the University of Bath was ranked 14 th , indicating that it was punching above its weight in terms of competitive success for Fellowships. The University was committed to support the Fellowships by covering the additional salary costs during the five-year period of tenure and converting them into permanent posts thereafter.
