Venturers vs Rode, Sunday July 19th

Venturers 45-odd for 1; game abandoned due to rain

It rained heavily but intermittently during the morning. We turned up for a 2:30 start hoping for the best, and immediately agreed to play 35 overs so as not be too much hampered by any showers. We lost the toss and were put in, and Matt and Roger made slow but steady progress for six and a half ovcers against good bowling. Then it rained, hard. We retreated, and when the rain let up half an hour later we reduced the overs further to 30 a side. The modified desensitised Duckworth-Lewis system that we use alowwed us an adjustment of zero runs, as it always does - we agreed that if he thought we had only thirty overs we wouldn't have done anything different anyway. We faced another seven overs, during which Matt got bowled and Rahul nearly ran himself out and was nearly LBW. Then, just after Roger had hit the first boundary across the rain-slowed outfield, it rained again, hard. This time, looking at the mess we were beginning to make of the pitch, and having regard to the fact that it wasn't much fun, we gave up and went home.
