Universities Twenty20 tournament, Sunday July 3rd

University of Bath Venturers Cricket Club - the University's staff and postgraduate side - made it three titles in a row on Sunday in the annual quadrangular Universities Twenty20 cricket competition held at the University of Bristol's Coombe Dingle sport facilities.

The tournament was first organised twelve years ago and is now an annual event. It features staff and postgraduate cricket sides from the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and UWE. This year, as in the two previous years, Bath won all three of their games, and have now won the last ten games they have played in the tournament.

This year Bath Venturers started with a narrow win against the Bristol Venturers (UWE), winning by five wickets but with only two balls to spare. In the second match they comfortably beat Cardiff, by 51 runs: meanwhile Bristol Academicals (Bristol University) lost narrowly to Bristol Venturers. That meant that Bath would win the tournament if they beat the Academicals in the last match, but probably not otherwise. From 56 for no wicket Bath Venturers collapsed to 83 for eight, but recovered to make 123. That proved to be just enough, as accurate bowling and some excellent catching dismissed Bristol Academicals for 113.

Full match reports for all three games will appear in due course on the Club website.

The Venturers Cricket Club is a friendly, recreational cricket club which normally plays friendly 20 and 40 over matches during the summer months, and is based at the Sulis Club close to campus.

New members of any ability, both staff and postgraduate students, are always welcome. Many current players joined the club having not played for many years, so all interest in the side is most welcome.
