Visa advice: Inviting family & friends
Visa Nationals - family or general visitor visa
If you are a visa national (check here) and family or friends want to visit you in the UK, they need a family (close family members) or general visitor visa from a British Mission.
Visitors must:
- be genuinely seeking entry for less than 6 months
- intend to leave at the end of their visit
- not intend to take employment
- not intend to study
- have enough money to house and maintain themselves or
- be housed and maintained by relatives or friends
- be able to meet the costs of the return or onward journey.
Letter of Invitation
You will need to send your visitors an invitation letter from the Student Services Centre in 4 West proving your status as a full-time student and the details of who you are inviting.

Documents your visitors will need
Your visitors will need the following documents for their visitor visa application and to carry in their hand luggage:
1. Documents from you:
- The Letter of Invitation
- A personal letter of invitation written by you (see template
) - Copies of your passport pages
- Copies of your bank statements or sponsors' letters
- Proof of accommodation - a copy of your tenancy contract or a hotel booking.
2. evidence of returning home, eg. details of work or business
3.
proof of salary or financial independence
4.
a return ticket or money to buy one
5.
your contact telephone number.
