Students enjoying themselves - Bath Walking TourWelcome to the Autumn issue of InterCom, the newsletter which aims to keep you up-to-date with issues of interest to international students - we hope you find it both informative and enjoyable to read!

In this issue you can read about how your feedback is changing the University for the better through the International Student Barometer, what it's like to be an international student helper, read about what an International Fresher thinks about his first few weeks at the University, look at what the International Office had for dinner at Grappa Bar and Pizzeria, and find out what our film critic thinks of the recent film, The Counterfeiters, and the classic Italian film, Respiro.

You are also able to take part in our recipe competition where the winner can win a meal for two at a local restaurant of their choice!

We are always interested in hearing your news and if you would like to write for InterCom in the future, just send your details to the International Office - if we publish an article, you will receive a gift voucher!

NEWS in brief

Orientation 2007
This year's Orientation events welcomed more international students than ever before. Thanks must go to our excellent team of international student helpers, who worked hard to ensure that new students were able to settle in easily and make new friends. If you have any comments about your experiences when you first arrived and new ideas for next year's events, please send them to the International Office - if we use your idea you could win a gift voucher!

Bath International Evening
Students from the University of Bath joined in with the local community on Saturday 27th October to put on one of the most successful Bath International Evenings since it started, 17 years ago. More than 18 countries were represented by students and members of the community, who served delicious specialities from their country, as well as offering guests the chance to learn more about their culture. After eating, guests went on to enjoy the world music disco, or even a free henna tattoo! The evening ended in dance, smiles and laughter and needless to say, the evening was a great success all around.
A review of the night can be found here....

New members of staff join the International Office
The International Office is pleased to welcome two new members of staff – Aste Dahl, who joins us as an Assistant International Student Adviser.

Global Group (BUGG)
BUGG is a social group set up to promote integration between international and local students. Its aim is to help International students settle in to University life and to break the barriers between the International and British student communities by arranging social events that both can enjoy. Membership to BUGG is free and several events, including a karaoke night, will be planned in the near future. Please see bathstudent.com for more information. Global Group is now also on Facebook.

International Office Scholarships awarded 2007
The International Office recently hosted its annual scholars' certificate presentation event. This year the University awarded £240,000 in scholarships to forty Undergraduate and forty Postgraduate students. The purpose of our scholarships programme is to recognise academic excellence in our students and the scholarships are awarded in the beginning of each academic year. This year we were again lucky to have the company of Jane Millar, our Pro Vice Chancellor for Strategic Development, joining us at the event. Students were able to meet fellow scholars and Dr Millar whilst enjoying a glass of wine and canapes.

Thailand Welcome Home Party
October saw a new development in our alumni events in Bangkok. At the suggestion of the Thai alumni we brought forward our annual alumni reception, usually held in February, and introduced a new theme - Welcome Home! With a number of Bath students having just completed their studies at the University and recently returned to their home country the event was an excellent opportunity to introduce our newest alumni to the rest of the community.

English Pilot Test Volunteers
The University of Bath English Language Test for Medical Professionals (UBELT) will be conducting English language pilot tests soon. If you have been in the UK for six months or less, they would like to invite you to be a volunteer for our pilot tests in reading and/or listening. The next pilot tests are planned for mid-November, but there will be others after that. Your help will be great appreciated, and as a “Thank You”, you will receive a WH Smith gift voucher of £5 for the pilot test you do. If you are interested please email Janet Scott. Please let her know what times of the day and which days you are currently available for.
