Paul Gregg appointed to Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission

Paul Gregg, Professor of Economic and Social Policy, has been appointed to the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission.

The Commission is an advisory non-departmental public body established under the Welfare Reform Act 2012. It is chaired by Alan Milburn, the former Health Secretary.

The Commission will monitor the Government’s progress in improving social mobility and reducing child poverty in the United Kingdom. It will also monitor the implementation of the most recent UK, Scottish, and Welsh child poverty strategies, and challenge non-government institutions such as those in higher education, business and elsewhere to improve their performance on social mobility.

Eight appointments in total were made to the Commission, which also included:

  • Baroness Gillian Shephard (Chair of the Council of the Institute of Education)
  • Anne Marie Carrie (Chief Executive of Barnardo’s)
  • David Johnston (Chief Executive of the Social Mobility Foundation)
  • Tom Attwood (non-executive Director at the Centre for Social Justice)
  • Paul Cleal (Head of Government and Public Sector at PwC)
  • Catriona Williams (Chief Executive of Children in Wales)
  • Douglas Hamilton (Head of Save the Children Scotland)
