Professor Anna Gilmore
Professor of Public Health, Department for Health
Anna Gilmore qualified in medicine in 1991 and following training in general medicine and tropical diseases has pursued a career in public health. Her research falls into three main areas:
- Analysing the influence of corporations on health and policy: Following the release of extensive internal tobacco industry documents, as result of litigation in the US, Anna leads on a global emerging field of enquiry to significantly further our understanding of the influence of tobacco corporations on science, public policy and health
- Policy evaluation of social change, policy change and specific policy interventions on health and health behaviours: Anna’s work evaluates public health policies (such as smokefree legislation) and broader social and macroeconomic policies (such as privatisation and transition from communism to a market economy) on health, health behaviours and health inequalities
- Evidence based approaches to public health policy: Anna’s work also involves developing evidence to inform future policy options
Anna has published over 149 chapters, papers and other articles on public health issues in the UK, European Union, Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
She is European Editor (previously Senior Editor) of Tobacco Control, the leading journal in her field. She has a particular interest in knowledge exchange and ensuring research contributes to policy debates. Anna was awarded the 2008 WHO Europe World No Tobacco Day Medal given “in recognition of outstanding contribution to tobacco control” and the 2009 Public Health Advocacy Institute International Award for Outstanding Use of Tobacco Industry Documents specifically in recognition of the contribution her Tobacco Industry research has made to policy. Her work has contributed to policy changes in Germany, Russia, the EU and UK.
