Professor Michael Lewis

Professor in Supply Strategy

Michael Lewis is Professor of Operations and Supply Management and Head of the Information, Decisions and Operations Group at Bath School of Management.

Prior to joining Bath in 2004, he was senior lecturer at Warwick Business School and a research fellow at the University of Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing. He has also held visiting appointments in the Technology and Operations Management group of Harvard Business School, the McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University and Danish Technical University.

His expertise covers a range of public and private sector operations and purchasing/supply management themes but specific policy related work includes:

  • how to procure complex performance (inc. PPP/PFI in healthcare, shared services, outsourcing, buying from the 3rd sector)
  • how to analyze and improve professional service (e.g. doctors, lawyers) productivity
  • how to assess and cope with operational risk (e.g. public service failures and interventions, vehicle safety recalls)

In addition to numerous journal articles, he is co-author of Operations Strategy (Third edition, 2011, Financial Times Prentice-Hall) and co-editor of Critical Readings in Operations Management (2003, Routledge) and the Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Operations Management (Blackwell, 2013).
