Sabbatical leave scheme
Internal Acadmic Sabbaticals
2012/13 and 2013/14
As an adjunct to the Sabbatical Leave Scheme, the University is establishing, on a pilot basis for 2012/13 and 2013/14, a scheme of Internal Academic Sabbaticals for the Institute for Policy Research. This will allow academic staff at the University to apply for a semester at the Institute, working on an inter-disciplinary research project (or projects) with substantial policy and/or public engagement.
The IPR sabbaticals are set within the broad framework of the existing University scheme, but with modifications and additions as described below.
During 2012/13 and 2013/14 the IPR pilot scheme will be administered by the IPR Sabbaticals Committee, consisting of the PVC Research (Chair), the (Acting) Director of the IPR and one other member of the IPR Steering Group nominated by the PVC Research.
Timetable
- The deadline for applications for sabbaticals starting 1 February 2013 is 30 November 2012
- The deadline for applications for sabbaticals starting 1 August 2013 is 15 January 2013
- Thereafter deadlines will be the same as for the main University scheme (thus 1st March 2013 for sabbaticals commencing 1 February 2014 and 30 November 2013 for sabbaticals commencing 1 August 2014)
- The arrangements for financial compensation for the academic’s Department will be the same as for the existing University scheme
- No sabbatical can be approved without the express agreement of the Head of Department concerned, confirming that the teaching and administrative duties of the academic in question can be covered. In considering this approval, the Head of Department may take into account the sabbaticals awarded to other members of the Department under the main University scheme
Aims of the Scheme
The IPR aims to promote inter-disciplinary research across the academic groups of the University and its policy and/or public engagement. These sabbaticals are intended to contribute to those aims.
Conditions
- Up to 8 awards of 6 month periods are available each academic year
- No Department will receive more than two IPR sabbaticals in any academic year
- Nobody may apply for a IPR sabbatical and a sabbatical within the main University scheme covering the same time period
- The sabbatical leave (in full or large part) will normally be spent at the IPR premises
Application Process
Applications must be made using the appropriate form, which includes a supporting statement from the Head of Department.
As well as heeding the general objectives of the University sabbatical scheme, the Committee will give priority to applications which:
- Involve a research project or projects which are interdisciplinary; which involve a strong degree of collaboration with colleagues from other than the applicant’s own Department; and which are endorsed by the HoD or Director of Research of those other Departments
- Involve a strong element of policy and/or public engagement
Applicants may apply simultaneously for funding under the IPR visiting scholar and policy maker exchange schemes, in order to enhance these aspects of their sabbatical bid. They may also identify particular PGR students whose research can be expected to benefit from association with the project.
Double applications shall be countenanced from two academics from different Departments, wishing to work together on a joint sabbatical project.
