What GTAs and PGRs said:
‘The learning cycle was really fantastic’
‘I liked the useful hints, confidence to teach, understanding needs of undergraduates and how this could be applied’
‘This course showed me what the needs of undergraduates may be. I saw where different styles of teaching may fit in’
‘This course made me think about different methods of teaching and how they develop particular skills, and which are the most effective’
‘This is a fantastic introduction for Post Grads who are teaching’
‘This course improved my confidence.’
An intensive teaching development programme which takes place over a full day, for GTAs and PGRs is available at several points during the academic year. The intensive is full of practical advice (with plenty of opportunities to discuss and practice approaches and techniques).
This programme provides participants with the opportunity to gain initial training to develop selected aspects of their teaching for improving and energising learning and development in Bath University students, through a discussion of specific issues and solutions in learning and teaching, including the following:
- How selected learning theories help us to perform better
- In what directions students coming to university, from their secondary education, can be facilitated to develop through an exposure to Higher Education (HE)
- How to manage classes more effectively
- How to deliver lectures to enable students to learn what we intended
- How to get the most from small group sessions
- How we would know whether students learnt what we set out to teach them
- How to assess students formatively and give feedback appropriately, 'for improvement'
- Quality Assurance practices/requirements of the university
- The UK Professional Standards Framework for supporting learning in HE
The intensive teaching development programme is the standard requirement for postgraduate students undertaking teaching or supporting learning, as set out in the University's Code of Practice Statement 9.
As became clear in the pilot, many students may wish to continue developing their teaching skills and abilities. Throughout the year, a range of workshops are available to postgraduates which cover issues such as an introduction to UK Higher Education, understanding international learners, conducting tutorials, and feedback. http://go.bath.ac.uk/workshops
