Launch of the LEAP project: enhancing assessment practices
A new and exciting institution-wide project to support the enhancement of assessment practices launches today. Led by the Learning & Teaching Enhancement Office (LTEO), the ‘Leading the Enhancement of Assessment Practices’ (LEAP) project aims to support departments in transforming assessment and feedback practices through the use of new technologies.
LEAP provides an opportunity to review and enhance practices across an entire department and not just within the confines of a single unit.
Professor Bernie Morley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching) said:
‘The LEAP project is an important initiative to support our ongoing commitment to enhance the learning experience of our students. We have already made significant progress in improving our assessment and feedback practices. LEAP provides entire departments with an opportunity to reflect on existing practice and develop enhanced assessment practices within a highly supportive project environment. I would encourage departments to get involved.’

The project’s aims and objectives are to:
- enhance the assessment and feedback experiences of our staff and students
- engage programme teams and students in the evaluation of existing practices to consider the relationship between intended learning outcomes, methods of delivery and methods of assessment and feedback
- explore and introduce appropriate and diverse delivery and assessment methods in order to provide rich learning opportunities
- explore the use of technology to support constructive alignment and administrative efficiencies
- engage and involve students in appropriate aspects of their own assessment
- identify and showcase good practice within, and across, departments.
Sign up to take part in the LEAP project by 26 October 2012
How will LEAP work?
LEAP will focus on the core programme in each department and its primary aim is to be developmental in nature.
It involves all members of staff who teach on it as well as a small number of enrolled students going through this programme. This will include:
- an initial meeting between the LEAP project leader and departmental representative(s) to discuss and clarify the aims, objectives and specific needs of the department
- an evaluation/audit of existing practices and identification of possible actions
- an exploration and introduction of appropriate and diverse delivery and assessment methods (including the use of appropriate technology)
- the implementation of actions arising from the evaluation/audit
- the identification and showcasing of examples of good practice.
Timescales
The LEAP project will run for three years and you can choose when you would like your department to participate.
