This year's Academic Rep Awards Winners
Awarded Academic Rep of the Year 2013 by the Students' Union and the University, Guillermo
Durango, a Masters Student in Aerospace Engineering, celebrated his success with 30 other students
and two members of staff, at this year's Awards Ceremony.
The 2013 Academic Rep Awards, hosted by the SU and supported by the University, took place on
Thursday 18 April in the Claverton Rooms. The annual awards, designed to celebrate and recognise
the work undertaken by Academic and Faculty Representatives during the academic year, were attended
by many staff and students. Both Professor Bernie Morley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning &
Teaching) and Alex Pool, SU Education Officer, thanked the Academic Representatives for their hard
work and contributions throughout the year.
Professor Morley said:
'As always, this ceremony is a pleasure to attend. We have worked hard this year to increase
the profile of these Awards as they are given in recognition of a significant amount of effort on
the part of our academic and faculty reps. The role of the reps plays a critical part in shaping
and informing the student experience and, as a University, we are committed to working with the SU
to find ways to encourage students to undertake this role.'
Winner of the Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) Chair of the year, Ailbhe Rees,
undergraduate Representative for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, gave an engaging
and insightful speech on the student representative's perspective on the representation system at
the University of Bath. Ailbhe was nominated by both staff and students for being a committed,
engaged and effective SSLC Chair.
Alex Pool, SU Education Officer said:
'This was the first year that students were invited to nominate their Academic
Representatives for an award. We were delighted with the positive response and received many
fantastic nominations. It was quite a challenging task for the Awards Panel to select our final
winners. We would like to congratulate them all for their great contributions this year. Academic
Reps are a huge support to my role, and make students lives at Bath better.'
