English Language Centre launches new web pages
The University's English Language Centre (ELC) has launched its
new web pages. Following fast on the news that students have
ranked the University of Bath third in the world for language support *, the redevelopment of the
ELC's web pages forms an important part of its work to continue building an international profile.
Professor Colin Grant, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Internationalisation) said:
'I congratulate the ELC on this latest development which will help support our work to better
promote our offer to students, staff and companies. Coupled with the latest, very impressive
results from the Student Barometer, we are extremely well placed to build on this success as we
continue to develop new overseas markets and build greater collaboration with institutions
worldwide.'
The ELC's new web pages offer comprehensive information for prospective and current students,
University staff and other partners working to provide first class language and skills development
support as an integral part of a high quality student experience. Part of the Learning &
Teaching Enhancement Office (LTEO), the ELC provides a wide range of programmes and services to
students as well as designing and delivering courses for professionals in companies such as Boots,
Tesco Pharmacy and Vectura. The ELC has recently launched its first
iOS app for healthcare professionals and students to improve their language
skills using smartphone and tablet technologies.
During the first part of the academic year, the ELC has piloted, in collaboration with four
academic departments, a new
Academic and
Professional Communication Skills (APCS) course. The main aim of these pilots was to explore
how skills support and development for students might be better integrated with their academic
study. Plans to extend the APCS are in train for the next academic year with the results of the
pilots informing how the courses can be delivered more effectively to meet the wide range of
differing needs within each subject discipline.
Maggie Ward Goodbody, Director of
the ELC, said:
'We are delighted to have the Centre's new web pages in place. This project has been a huge
amount of work for members of the team but we are confident it will pay dividends as we focus our
attention on identifying new external markets in an increasingly competitive environment. The web
pages offer much clearer and better structured information about the wide range of courses and
services that we offer. Our thanks as well to the Web Services Team, who have given us excellent
support throughout this development.'
Feedback and ideas for further development of the ELC web pages are welcomed. Please
email Mary Forbes, Pre-sessional Courses
Director, ELC.
