Innovations in Learning & Teaching
Thursday 10 May 2012, University of Bath
This year's Innovations in Learning & Teaching Day will be on the theme of 'Furthering Knowledge: the Link Between Teaching & Research'. The University of Bath's stated mission "is to deliver world class research and teaching, educating our graduates to become future leaders and innovators, and benefiting the wider population through our research, enterprise and influence." This year, Innovations Day will explore how the various aspects of this mission are being brought together within our curricula, research and public engagement.

Keynote Speakers:
Professor Simon Bates, Physics Education Research Group, School of Physics & Astronomy, University of Edinburgh
Two ways to invert your classroom (...and why you should bother)
Simon will present two examples of how to invert elements of a traditional university teaching and learning experience, linking in to Innovations Day themes of research-informed and research-based teaching. The concept of inverting (or 'flipping') the classroom experience relates to making more effective use of precious class time (in his example, lectures) and providing more support to students (in this case, peer support) engaged in self-study activities outside class time. Drawing on innovations within our first year Physics courses, he will present details of what they did, together with research evidence for the effectiveness in improving student engagement and learning. Although grounded in his subject area of Physics, the examples shown and educational principles involved have relevance and applicability across a broad range of subjects.
Annette Hayton, Head of Widening Participation, University of Bath Learning, Teaching and Diversity Widening participation has sometimes been associated with lowering standards, 'dumbing down' and 'Mickey Mouse' degrees. This session will explore some of the assumptions behind these perceptions and consider the benefits for teaching and learning of a more diverse student group.
The programme also includes Faculty-based sessions, a lunchtime showcase of posters and videos and afternoon workshop / discussion / seminar sessions.
