Learning & Teaching Enhancement

National Teaching Fellowships Scheme

Part of our commitment to recognise and support individual staff members' professional development in learning and teaching is to support applications for the Higher Education Academy's (HEA) National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS).

The scheme aims to:

  • raise the profile of learning and teaching
  • recognise and celebrate individuals who make an outstanding impact on the student learning experience.

Through this national scheme, up to 55 awards of £10,000 are made by the HEA to recognise individual excellence. The award may be used for Fellows' personal and/or professional development in teaching and learning aspects of pedagogy.

Each year the HEA invite us to nominate up to three candidates for NTFS. The selection of proposed candidates for nomination is made with confidential input from previous NTFS winners.

Eligibility and criteria

These fellowships are not restricted to those on academic contracts only, nor only to those in direct teaching roles. The support of learning, teaching and curriculum development or higher education learning and teaching research activity could be recognised through these fellowships, as much as excellence in teaching. You can find out more from the NTFS Overview Report for further details of successful nominations.

Timescale

As the process of preparing a nomination is time consuming, each year we set an internal deadline for proposing colleagues. The internal deadline this year is Friday 27 September 2013. The national scheme will be launched on 15 October 2013 with the final deadline for submissions to the HEA by 14 January 2014.

If you are interested in being considered for NTFS, we welcome informal enquiries, all of which are handled confidentially. We offer full support, advice and guidance to selected nominees in their preparation of a submission.
