Learning & Teaching Enhancement

Professional recognition

We offer you a number of different ways to continue the professional development of your learning and teaching career. We also provide support for individuals and teams to gain formal, external recognition for their contribution to learning and teaching.

Our routes to recognition

We can support you in attaining a Fellowship of the HEA through participation in the Bath Course in Enhancing Academic Practice or by individual direct entry. One-to-one and group support is available for this direct route.

New developments

We are developing a University of Bath Teaching Recognition Scheme that will encompass a variety of ways for staff who teach or support learning to gain recognition for their professional practice.

Once this scheme is in place and the processes we have to assess applicants have been agreed and accredited by the HEA, we will be able to confer the status of Associate Fellow (AFHEA), Fellow (FHEA), Senior Fellow (SFHEA) or Principal Fellow (PFHEA) of the Higher Education Academy.

Dr Rachael Carkett, Academic Staff Development, is leading the development of this scheme and is interested in receiving input and ideas to the development of this scheme.

Attaining a Fellowship from the HEA

We can support you in the attainment of Fellowship status from the Higher Education Academy (HEA) through these routes:

Gaining Fellowship status provides national recognition of a commitment to professionalism in teaching and learning in higher education and demonstrates that practice is aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF).

The HEA offers four levels of recognition through its Professional Recognition Scheme:

  • Associate Fellow (AFHEA)
  • Fellow (FHEA)
  • Senior Fellow (SFHEA)
  • Principal Fellow (PFHEA)

The HEA aligns these Fellowship categories directly with the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) descriptors.
