Researcher Development

Supporting your researchers

As a Principal Investigator, it is expected that you engage in the professional and career development of the researchers you are responsible for. This is an expectation placed on you, not only by the University of Bath, but also by key national stakeholders, funders and the UK Government, as laid out in:

  • The Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers
  • The Code of Practice for the Employment of Research Staff

You should actively encourage researchers to undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity, as far as it is possible within the research project.

  • Training and development needs should be discussed regularly. Good opportunities are the mid-/end of probation review and the Staff Development Performance Review (SPDR), which all staff are expected to take part in annually.
  • It is good practice to approach your staff to arrange a SDPR. However, expect your staff to ask you for one if you don’t arrange it.

The researchers@bath web pages provides you with courses and events in an A-Z format and also mapped against the Researcher Development Framework.
