Staff Student Liaison Committee (2002/03)
In 2002/03 an audit of staff student liaison committees was undertaken in accordance with QA54, Internal Academic Audit. The audit was based on previous version of QA48, Guidelines for the Establishment and Operation of Staff/Student Liaison Committees (The new version of QA48 can be found here). The audit identified the following areas of good practice.
- The Departmental SSLC website was clear and informative;
- The clear guidance in programme handbooks;
- The letter sent to all distance-learning students advising them of the role and remit of the SSLC and providing details of how students should make use of the Committee;
- Dates of SSLC meetings were published at the beginning of the year and provided at induction and on the SSLC notice board;
- All students were emailed to request agenda items and encouraged to attend meetings;
- A pre-meeting of students was held where students would write up a list of items to be raised;
- Minutes were emailed to all students;
- The use of standard agenda items and the inclusion of university-wide issues when appropriate;
- The use of standing agenda items;
- The scheduling of special meetings dedicated to the discussion of key issues;
- The SSLC received a summary of any formal complaints;
- The inclusion of the Subject Librarian at meetings to consider Library issues;
- The inclusion of the Link Tutor, BUSU representatives and Library representatives at meetings;
- The participation of the whole cohort;
- The valuable experience gained by students whilst acting as Secretary and Chair.
The Quality Assurance Committee noted these areas of good practice at its meeting on 15 October 2003 and agreed that they should be published and disseminated to all Chairs of Staff Student Liaison Committees and to Heads of Department and Department Administrators.
