Much of her work is connected with developing, evaluating and disseminating the effective use of Moodle, the University’s Virtual Learning Environment. The faculty has an expanding portfolio of Moodle courses used for a variety of teaching, learning and administrative purposes.

Experience and expertise

E-portfolios: Geraldine leads the Department of Education’s e-portfolios for ITE initiative where trainee teachers are using either PebblePad or a Web 2.0 approach. This initiative has received two rounds of funding from the TDA (Teaching Development Agency) and outputs include conference papers and case studies of good practice.

Digital Media for assessment: Geraldine provides advice and support in using Web 2.0 approaches for diversifying assessment products and practices. Drawing on experience using Voicethread for peer feedback and assessment in undergraduate teaching she can give guidance on good practice.

SMS: Following a successful, locally funded project with undergraduates, Geraldine supports staff in using mobile communication (e.g. with Txttools, a texting management service) for teaching and administration.

Designing and evaluating e-learning activities: Geraldine is leading the PGCAPP e-learning unit. She designs and runs workshops to support participants in implementing e-learning interventions tailored to their own teaching and learning context.

Biography

Curriculum Design

Geraldine’s background is in open and distance learning and her involvement in the design and development of the School for Health’s suite of online distance learning programmes (MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine, PD Health etc.) has provided her with valuable experience in designing, developing and implementing e-learning innovations. In particular, teaching development funded projects have acted as text beds for innovation:

Geraldine has long standing experience in e-moderating and the design of e-tivities to scaffold learning in online groups with an extensive portfolio of online group learning activities used in a variety of contexts e.g. UG/PG Induction, PD Health, MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine, staff development e-workshops for online tutors, CPD for adult care workers.

Teaching

In the Department of Education Geraldine contributes teaching sessions to the MA Technologies for Learning unit and the BA Open and Distance Learning unit. Her interest is in the technologies and philosophies that underpin mobile learning and Web 2.0 and their implications for learning and teaching. The ways in which e-learning technologies shape staff approaches to teaching and the ways in which staff approaches to teaching shape their adoption of e-learning technologies is an ongoing interest.
