National Student Survey 2010

Contents: Background | Use of the Data and Results | Departmental responses | You said, we did

Background

The first National Student Survey took place in 2005 and is now an annual occurrence.  All final year undergraduate students in HEFCE funded institutions (together with HE students in Further Education Colleges) were sent a copy of the survey containing questions grouped into seven sections (Teaching on my course, Assessment and Feedback, Academic Support, Organisation and Management, Learning Resources, Personal Development and Overall). The results relate to subject JACS codes at level 3.

This years results of the National Student Survey have now been sent to Universities, with the results published on the web as part of the Teaching Quality Information requirements.  This year the response threshold remained at 23 responses with the perecentage response rate required remaining at the 50% level.

However, additional data is produced for universities and their students’ unions which includes qualitative comments as well as the statistical information for those subjects that fall outside of the ‘reliability threshold’ and departmental data.  This additional data is available for internal use only. Please contact the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office for more information.

Use of the Data and Results

Various statistical tables together with editorials have been produced both internally and nationally (The Guardian, the BBC, and the THES) to show the results.

Reports showing all the questions of the survey including the additional bank of questions, drilled down into the component questions of the various sections are available internally from the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office or via the University surveys wiki .

The University Learning, Teaching and Quality Committee (ULTQC) takes overall responsibility for seeking to address the institutional-wide concerns raised in the results and to ensure that the subject-specific concerns are being addressed within departments and faculties.

Departmental responses

This data has been sent to all undergraduate Directors of Studies, Heads of Departments and Associate Deans , together with the Students’ Union for discussion at Departmental meetings as well as Staff Student Liaison Committees (and the SU’s Academic Council). University Learning, Teaching and Quality Committee will recieve reports as part of QA51 (Annual Monitoring of Units and Programmes) for every undergraduate programme and the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office is working with departments and Faculties, the School and the Division to help implement their strategies to further enhance the learning and teaching provision for students at the University of Bath.
