Learning & Teaching Enhancement

Programme Evaluation

Programme Evaluation has run since 2011/12 following a successful trial in a number of departments in 2010/11.

The main aim of Programme Evaluation is to help the University and the Students' Union enhance the quality of the academic experience. We collect feedback from our current taught students in a systematic and user-friendly way.

Scope of the survey

The primary aim of the evaluation is to measure the overall academic experience of studying on taught programmes. Areas for questioning have been designed to complement unit evaluations, National Student Survey (NSS), Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) and to explore:

  • academic transition
  • learning and teaching
  • assessment and feedback
  • student engagement
  • student voice
  • learning resources
  • personal tutoring
  • academic support and welfare
  • organisation and management
  • careers
  • students' union
  • overall thoughts and views

A shorter evaluation with fewer questions is available for final year undergraduates who would have been invited to complete the NSS earlier in the academic year:

  • learning and teaching
  • student engagement
  • student voice
  • personal tutoring
  • placement, study year abroad and industrial training year
  • project and dissertation
  • intellectual motivation
  • careers
  • overall thoughts and views

Timetable

The schedule for this year is:

  • start date: mid-April
  • close date: Sunday 30 June 2013

Maximising response rates

Weekly response rate figures are provided that enable us to target our marketing and promotional activities to specific departments and programmes to ensure they reach the thresholds for publication.

To help you keep up-to-date with the response rates from students in your department, we will provide you with regular updates on progress.

Encouraging student participation

In order to collect the most accurate data possible, we want to encourage a high number of responses from our students. One of the ways we achieve this response rate is by developing an environment of open and honest feedback and by promoting the Programme Evaluation through a targeted campaign to students.

We promote the Programme Evaluation to our students through a variety of institutional events and promotions. If you would like to further raise the profile of Programme Evaluation with students in your department, please email Shaun McGall.

Feeding back to students

Responding to student feedback is an effective way of encouraging participation in future surveys. It is expected that results of Programme Evaluation will be fed back to the student body by departments and their Staff Student Liaison Committee (SSLC) so that students can see that we have been responsive to their feedback.

You can read the full details of how academic departments should respond to the data from Programme Evaluation in the Code of Practice on the Annual Monitoring of Units and Programmes (QA51).
