Referencing guide: Reference management software

EndNote reference management software

  • When researching for assignments and dissertations, you will collect many references to articles, books and other documents. EndNote Online and EndNote Desktop are tools that enable you to store and organise references from various library databases including, amongst others, Scopus, Web of Science, Econlit, IBSS, IEE and PubMed. Note that there are often limits on the number of references you can export concurrently and that these limits vary between individual databases.
  • EndNote Online and EndNote Desktop also enable you to import references into your work, allowing you to 'cite while you write', so that they appear as citations in your main text and as references in your reference list / bibliography.
  • If you use referencing software, you still need to check the accuracy of your referencing and we recommend that you use multiple methods to store your references. For example, many library databases provide the option to select and email results, or save them to a file.
  • Note: The Library generally provides basic support for EndNote users so with some enquiries, you may be required to contact the provider Clarivate.

EndNote Online

The EndNote Online guide contains information and instructions for users of the online version of EndNote. To summarise a few key points:

  • EndNote Online is generally considered more suitable than EndNote Desktop for undergraduates and taught postgraduates, but researchers might also like to consider using it. Do NOT use this version if you need to merge references from multiple documents.

  • It is a free online tool, available both on and off-campus. Potentially, it enables you to store an unlimited number of references and attachments (please refer to the guide for more details).

  • You can use it to import citations and references in various referencing styles that are specific to University of Bath, for example, Harvard (Bath).

  • Should you wish to, you can transfer references between EndNote Desktop and EndNote Online.

EndNote Desktop

The EndNote Desktop guide contains information for users of the the desktop version of EndNote. EndNote Desktop is generally more suitable than EndNote Online for research postgraduates and staff. You need to use this version if you need to merge references from multiple documents. EndNote Desktop is an advanced piece of software that offers greater functionality than EndNote Online but it takes longer to master.

Two options for accessing EndNote Desktop

  • EndNote Desktop is freely available on the University network and is accessible on-campus on any University-managed PC. If off-campus, you can access it using a UniApps connection. If you use the networked copy, you will need to transfer your stored references to another tool (e.g. EndNote Online) just before completing your course or contract. Otherwise, you will lose access to those references once you have left the University.

  • The University of Bath has a site licence which allows you to download EndNote desktop to your own device: this will enable you to import references (from EndNote) into Word without having to be online. It will also enable you to store your references in perpetuity.
