How to access Endnote reference management tools for researchers

Guidance about how to access the EndNote Online and EndNote Desktop tools to save and organise cited resources and then import references into your work.

Which should I use: Endnote Online or EndNote Desktop?

When researching for assignments and dissertations, you will collect many references to articles, books and other documents. EndNote Online and EndNote Desktop are tools that enable you to store and organise references from various sources including, amongst others, Web of Science, Scopus, Econlit, IBSS, IEE and PubMed.

EndNote Online and EndNote Desktop also enable you to import references into your work i.e. "cite while you write", so that they appear as citations in your main text and as references in your list/bibliography.

EndNote Online

  • EndNote Online is most suitable generally for undergraduates and taught postgraduates.
  • It is a free online tool, available both on and off-campus, which allows you to retain references for the duration of your studies at university.
  • Your PC/laptop/device will need to be compatible with the software system requirements
  • You can transfer references between EndNote Desktop and EndNote Online: instructions.

How to access EndNote Online

  • Register as an EndNote Online user. To do this, you are recommended to access EndNote Online via Web of Science (previously known as Web of Knowledge) or Web of Science Core Collection. After entering Web of Science, click 'Register' within the 'Customize Your Experience' section on the right-hand side.

  • Compatibility: Your PC/laptop/device will need to be compatible with the following: operating system and browser requirements.

  • Once you are registered, you can connect to EndNote Online: To do this, connect first to either Web of Science or Web of Science Core Collection. Then, click the EndNote link which is located in the top menu. EndNote Online can also be accessed directly via www.endnoteweb.com but it is better to connect via Web of Science.

  • It is advisable to connect to EndNote Online before searching Web of Science.

  • To access your full EndNote Online account for at least 12 months: You must log on to EndNote Online within every twelve months via Web of Science / Web of Science Core Collection - and you must do this, either by logging on using an on-campus networked computer, or by using an off-campus UniDesk/UniApps connection. If you do not use one of these methods, 50,000 of your references will be transferred to more limited “EndNote Basic” account -you will be able to use a "Basic" account in perpetuity. To find out about the differences between the "basic" and "full" versions, please refer to http://endnote.com/product-details/basic

  • To access either the full "EndNote Online" or "EndNote Basic" after you have left University: you need to log in via: http://my.endnote.com/

  • Will your references be available throughout your time at this University? They will not be available in the case of technical difficulties with the connection to the provider's server in the United States. It is therefore recommended that you regularly transfer your references from EndNote Online to the EndNote Desktop or save them as a backup file in either Rich Text Format or Text Format.

How to access Endnote Desktop

  • On-campus users: EndNote Desktop software is installed on all the public access computers in the Library and can be used free of charge. If you find a Library PC without EndNote installed, please contact us immediately.

  • Off-campus-users can access EndNote Desktop on the University network through the following routes (but please note that you will lose access when you leave the University so you may prefer to purchase your own copy):

    • PC users can connect via the UniDesk service: instructions for setting up UniDesk
    • Mac users can connect via UniApps

Purchasing and using your own copy:

You may prefer to purchase your own copy of EndNote Desktop. This option will enable you to retain your references in perpetuity without needing to transfer them. Please note: instructions for purchasing a copy at a discounted price.

MAC users: please note that currently, the "Cite While You Write" plug-in does not work properly with Office 2016 Word although there are potential workaround solutions that you might like to try implementing.

Compatibility: your PC/laptop/device will need to be compatible with the following: browser and operating system requirements.

Style files: to use the Library's custom Harvard (Bath) with EndNote Desktop on your own PC/laptop, you will need to save this Harvard (Bath) style file to your styles folder. Browse to the EndNote program file folder on your hard disk and paste or drop this file into the folder. It will then appear in your list of style options in EndNote. You can also download the following: a Bath version of the Journal of Sports Sciences style file and a corrected version of the journal reference style for Photochemical Photobiological Sciences.
