Web of knowledge

The Web of knowledge is an index to high-quality journals in all subject areas.  This workshop will give you a detailed explanation of what is included in the Web of Knowledge with hints and tips on how best to search it.  We will include citation searching and setting up search alerts.

PsycINFO and PsycEXTRA

PsycINFO is an index to high-quality documents in areas such as psychology, education, health and sports science; PsycEXTRA is a database of psychology, behavioral sciences and health 'grey literature'.  This workshop will give you hints and tips on how best to search PsycINFO and PsycEXTRA, and how to set up search alerts.

Chemistry databases 1: SciFinder

SciFinder is the most important source of information in chemistry and chemistry related topics.  It provides an index to journal articles, patents and chemical data.  The following types of searches will be included: chemical name, CAS registry number, molecular formula, subject, structure, substructure and reactions.

Compendex and Referex via Engineering Village

Compendex is the most comprehensive bibliographic database of scientific and technical engineering research available.  In this session we will look at the most effective ways of searching the database, retrieving full text documents, and how to save searches and set up alerts.  The session will also include an overview of Referex, a database of electronic engineering books.

Keeping up to Date

When engaged in cutting edge research it is important to keep up to date with new literature as it is published.  This session will explain how to set up table of contents alerts for journals and how to use database search alerts to find out when something new is published in your area.  It will also explain RSS feeds and how to use them.

Chemistry databases 2: Reaxys

Reaxys includes authoritative information in organic, inorganic and organometalic chemistry drawn from experimental data reported in journal articles and patents.  In this workshop you will learn how to use the Reaxys service to find information on chemical compounds.  The following types of searches will be included: chemical name, CAS registry number, molecular formula, structure, substructure and reactions.
