Getting a Library Card

All members of the University are entitled to membership of the Library.

When can I get a library card?

You can get a new or replacement library card from the Library Issue Desk between 9am and 445pm, Monday to Friday.  Please note that due to staff training the Issue Desk opens at 930am on Wednesdays in semester-time. The Issue Desk closes during University holidays.

If you can't visit the Library during those times you can contact the Library Team to get advice about becoming a member and getting a card.

The first card is issued to all library members free but there is an £5 charge for replacement of lost cards. (The cost was lowered from £8 in September 2017).

If you need this extra access you must contact your department, University Security staff or the accommodation service as appropriate.  Library staff neither the authority or the ability to grant access to any part of the University other than the Library entrance gates.

There are different types of membership to the University Library:

Student library cards

Applying for your card online

You can apply for a library card before you arrive at the University.  You can upload your own photo before you get here during online registration.

Admissions will contact you to let you know when you can start the registration process.   

If you are a new student you must complete registration before you can apply for your library card.

If you have problems registering contact the Student Records and Examinations Office or Finance Office.

Applying at the Library Issue Desk

If you have not applied for your library card online you can get one from the Issue Desk.

You need to register online before asking for your card.  Please bring your student number or your Computing Services username.

We can't use printed photos for your cards.  We can take your photo in the library when you come in.

Borrowing books with your card

You can borrow twenty books at a time using your card.

Expiry of membership

Your card is valid for the duration of your studies.  After this you can apply for Alumni membership.

 

Staff library card

You can get a library card as a member of staff working for the University.

Usually, you get a card as part of the induction process.   You will be brought to the Library by someone in your team to have your photo taken for your card.

Your library card is linked to other University systems so you need to be added to PersonFinder before you can have a card.

Expiry of membership

Staff cards are valid for up to five years or until the expiry of your contract.  You can renew your card when it expires if you are still working at the University.  If your contract ends you can become a Visitor member of the library.

 

Visitor library card

You can join the University of Bath Library even if you are not a student or member of staff.

Annual visitor fee

The annual fee for Visitor membership is currently £150 (including VAT).  You can pay in cash or by credit or debit card. 

We do not take cheques or American Express.

Services for visitors

Library catalogues and online resources

As a visitor you can access a selection of online resources through our Library catalogue terminals.  These are on levels two to five of the building.

Photocopying

You can buy photocopy cards from a self-service machine on Level 2.  The machine is opposite the Copy and Print area.

Alumni library card

You can use the University Library even after graduating with Alumni membership.

Applying for your card on campus

You can get a membership card from the Issue Desk on Level 2 of the Library.

Alumni membership fees

Membership is free for the first twelve months after your graduation date.

After twelve months you will be charged an annual fee.  The fee is currently £50 (including VAT).

Borrowing books with your card

You can borrow five books using your card.  Please note the library cannot send books to you.  Access to online resources such as electronic journals, databases and ebooks is restricted to the catalogue computers in the library.

Important notes about using your card

You must have a valid library card to enter the Library. If you have forgotten or mislaid your card, staff at the Reception Desk may, at their discretion, allow temporary access for that day. A record will be kept, and if the card is not presented on your next visit you will be required to purchase a replacement.

Your Library Card and associated PIN is for your use alone, it is not interchangeable and you cannot authorise another person to use it on your behalf.

The Library Card is linked to your personal library record and makes you responsible for the items loaned on it and any fines associated with your borrower record. Please do not ask staff to provide library services using any card other than your own.


Replacement Library Card

If you lose your library card, replacements are available at the Issue Desk on Level 2 at a cost of £5.  This is non-refundable.  Lost cards will be invalidated and cannot be reactivated if found again. 

If your library card is broken, damaged or no longer functions properly please bring it to the Issue Desk during the card making periods for a free replacement.
