E-Books for Architecture & Civil Engineering 

You are not generally permitted to systematically download or print more than one chapter or 5% of an e-book. 

You can search for and access ebook titles like any other book using the Library Catalogue.  Accessing e-book content via the links below will give you extra search options; for example, the ability to look for a specific keyword or phrase in the full-text of an ebook. 

 

Archive.org

Provides a huge range of book content free for use (or near-unrestricted use) online. A mix of facsimiles and plain text versions. A useful source of 19th and 20th Century books.

 

Charles Rennie Mackintosh's sketches of Northern Italy

This sketchbook, now held in the Glasgow School of Art archive, was taken by Charles Rennie Mackintosh on his tour of Italy, France and Belgium in 1891, as the recipient of the Alexander Thomson Travelling Studentship. The online version retraces Mackintosh's route via interactive 19th century Baedeker maps, and shows his sketches alongside present day photographs of the same locations.

CRC Press ‘Energy and clean technology NetBase’

Ebook collection covering a wide range of energy topics e.g. renewable technologies, waste water and much more. Click the box that says ‘full access content only’ to get our subscribed titles (295 out of 331 – we don’t have access to 2014 content). All titles can also be found in the Library catalogue.
 


Heidelberg University Books on Architecture and Garden Design

This service give free access to full text scanned images of books from the University of Heidelberg Library's historical collection on architecture and garden architecture. The books date from the late 15th to early 19th Century and include rare and precious illustrated editions from Italy, France, Germany and other European countries, architectural tracts and Säulenbücher, meant as pattern books for the contemporary architects. 


JISC Historical Texts

Search and access full text or page images of more than 300,000 books published in England before 1800. Combines content from EEBO (Early English Books Online), ECCO (Eighteenth Century Collections Online) and the British Library's 19th Century Collections.


Knovel Library

Searchable full text access to over 4,000 leading handbooks, databases, encyclopedia and reference books across all engineering disciplines. Knovel also provides tools to analyze and display data found.

OECD iLibrary

Provides online access to publications and statistics from the OECD Organisation for Economic Development, IEA (International Energy Agency), NEA (Nuclear Energy Agency), OECD Development Centre and ITF (International Transport Forum). Note: IEA datasets are available via the UK Data Service.


Oxford Art Online

Oxford Art Online gives full text, searchable access to four online reference works: Grove Art Online, The Oxford Companion to Western Art, the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics and the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms.  Links to other web resources also included.


Oxford Reference Online

Collection of reference works published by Oxford University Press covering the Arts, English Language Reference, Modern Languages, Politics and Social Sciences, and Science.  


Project Gutenberg Architecture Bookshelf

'Project Gutenberg' offers access to over 36,000 free ebooks.  The Architecture Bookshelf includes mostly 19th and early 20th Century books on architecture, covering eg British cathedrals, churches, theatres and a copy of Vitruvius' 'Ten books on architecture'.
