Statistics & Data for Health 

In addition to the following online resources, you will find many sources of statistics and data via Google - however: please assess any websites with regards to their data collection methods (e.g. sample sizes) and any potential bias in the interpretation of data. You might also like to search/browse some of the following websites which provide statistics on a wide range of topics: 

  • Statista: a Google-like search tool providing access to:
      • 1 million set of statistics covering for example, attitudesopinions, population & public services
      • Forecasts, reports & dossiers - facts & figures that are easily displayed in charts and graphs 
      • Particularly strong coverage of UK, continental Europe, North America and China

  • Company, Financial & Legal Data/Information - databases such as EMIS (provides healthcare and social assistance reports) 
     
  • Data.gov.uk: social, economic & population statistics provided by the UK government and other UK organisations 
     
  • Department of Health: Statistics: also includes performance indicators & codes of practice - for current & older statistical reports, refer to Department of Health Publications & Letters Library (now part of the National Archives)
     
  • Gapminder World: provides a very broad and easily accessible range of statistics in graph & excel formats.  Click on the data tab to search for categories which include amongst many others, life expectancy, income, poverty rates, smoking prevalence, alcohol consumption, death rates (by specific injuries, situations, disasters, diseases, illnesses), governments' shares of health spending & economic growth. You can control the graphs in order to compare data from specific countries over a period of time. Click on visualize to view a specific graph (which will also be available in Excel format).

  • Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC): NHS data covering audits, finance, indicators and performance in health & lifestyles, hospital care mental health, population and geography, primary care and screening 
     
  • Market Research Data & Country Profiles: resources such as Passport include data and analysis relevant to health topics e.g. diet & tobacco consumption 
     
  • Office for National Statistics: broad range of UK social, economic & population statistics at national/local level.  You may find it helpful to "browse by theme".  Resources include, for example:
  • Office of Health Economics: health statistics & data analysis: demographic/mortality/morbidity statistics across Europe & OECD countries, and NHS statistics (expenditure, health services, hosptials, workforce)   
     
  • Statistics collection on Level 5 - located opposite the Information Point. Includes census reports and titles such as Health Statistics QuarterlySocial Trends. Search for titles using the Library Catalogue.

  • UK Data Archive: research data in the social sciences
  • UK Data Service: a major resource for UK government and international data. Content includes the British Household Panel Survey and General Household Survey, British Cohort Study, International Social Survey Programme, Millennium Cohort Study and National Statistics Time Series. To access some data, you need to log in/register with UK Data Service. Some datasets restrict access e.g. where commercial usage might be sought, permission could be required or sponsoring organisations may vet publications.  
     

  • UK Health Forum: health condition prevention data & statistics
       
  • United Nations Statistical Databases: a range of databases providing access to social data: most are freely available 
     
  • WHO: World Health Organization: statistics 
     
  • Zanran: simple search engine which retrieves a wide range of statistics & data
