FdSc Addictions Counselling franchised to Action on Addiction

(UCAS Code: B940; Campus Code: H - Action on Addiction)

This programme aims to meet the increased demand for capable practitioners in the field of Addictions Counselling. It enables students who are interested in working in the field of addictions treatment, to become skilled, reflective and competent counsellors. The programme aims to integrate humanistic, cognitive behavioural, motivational and twelve step models. Whilst maximising flexibility in terms of learning opportunities it is intended that this programme be available to both novice practitioners and others who are employed within an addictions setting.

This programme includes a large work-based component where academic knowledge and understanding will reinforce and underpin the development of vocational skills in a planned integration of academic learning with work-based skills. The programme philosophy focuses on the development of reflective and effective clinical practice, provided by a range of learning opportunities including:

This programme is offered on a full time basis only (two years). Full time students are expected to be new to the field and will have to complete two periods of placement.

Students on the programme are registered at the University of Bath and the Centre for Addictions Treatment Studies and are able to use the facilities at both for the duration of the course. The University’s facilities include the University Library and Learning Centre and the extensive range of sports and recreation facilities.

FDAP (The Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals) has granted graduates of the Foundation Degree in Addictions Counselling Type 3 evidence for 12 DANOS units. This entitles holders of the Foundation Degree in Addictions Counselling, upon completion of some simple proformae, to become certified by FDAP as ‘Accredited Practitioners’ before entering employment.

On successful completion of the Foundation degree, students who have achieved a sufficient grade level will be given the opportunity to progress to a one-year (full-time) or two year (part-time) programme leading to a BSc (Hons) Addictions Counselling Work-based Learning degree.
