The Foundation Degree in Applied Computing is designed to prepare you for a variety of computing careers such as Games Development, Multimedia or Artificial Intelligence. A wide range of subjects have been selected to meet the current needs of industry, including programming languages, web design, database development, IT security, hardware and business analysis. Additional specialist options are also available to develop your skills in specific areas of interest. The project in the final year applies theoretical and practical knowledge to develop a viable solution to a commercially related specification.

Through practical and professional activities you will develop essential work skills, such as Programming, Database Design, Web Creation and Diagnostic Skills. The work-based learning nature of the programme has been designed in consultation with regional IT employers. The work placement also forms an integral part of the course.

Students will be registered at the University of Bath and the partner institution however the programmes will be delivered entirely at the partner organisation.

On successful completion of the Foundation degree, you may be given the opportunity to progress to a one-year programme leading to a BSc (Hons) Applied Computing Work-based Learning degree.

Entry Requirements for 2013

Applications are welcomed from candidates with the following qualifications:

BTEC Extended Diplomas (suite of qualifications known as Nationals on the QCF Framework) in the following areas:

BTEC Nationals (NQF Framework) in the following related areas:

BTEC Diploma (Old National Certificate - QCF Framework). 

A’ levels
Applicants must be studying a minimum of 2 full A' Levels achieveing an overall profile of CC including a grade C in ICT, Computing, Applied ICT, Maths, Science or Technology

NVQ  and other L3 Qualifications (in IT or a related subject area)
Candidates must PASS the qualification and may also be asked to undertake a written academic piece of work before an offer will be made.

Access to Higher Education Diploma (in the following subjects)
Computing, IT, ICT, Business, Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics. Students must have Level 2 English and Maths (either included or extra) and pass all 60 credits with minimum of 45 at L3.

Advanced Level Apprenticeships
As part of the WVLLN progression agreement, candidates with an Advanced Level Apprenticeship in IT, Software, Web and Telecoms professionals (gained within the last 5 years) are guaranteed an interview for this programme to having the appropriate professional experience.

Level 2 Maths and English
All applicants will normally also require passes (at grade C or above) in Maths and English or their level 2 equivalents. Details of level 2 equivalent qualifications can be found here.

Non UK based qualifications
Students applying with non-UK based qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants with Full Level 3 qualifications but not in a related subject area
Students with full Level 3 qualifications but not in a related subject area must have a minimum of two years relevant work experience. If candidates are able to demonstrate that they have developed the necessary skills to succeed on the course can apply through the University's AP(E)L procedures. Applicants without formal academic qualifications
Students without formal qualifications but who have a minimum of two years relevant work experience and are able to demonstrate that they have developed the necessary skills to succeed on the course can apply through the University's AP(E)L procedures.  Details of the AP(E)L process can be found here.

English Language Requirements
Where English is not the applicant’s first language an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5. in all areas or equivalent qualification, will normally be required.
