King Charles II
Wednesday 20 March 2013
Venue: Lecture Theatre 8W 1.1
Charles II has an enduring public reputation as the most urbane, witty, tolerant, cultured, cynical and sophisticated of monarchs, a modern man before his time. How much, however, is this image a modern myth, and how much does it reflect historical reality? This talk proposes to give a rounded picture of his nature and his abilities as a ruler, and asks whether this so-called Merry Monarch might not better be termed the Slippery Sovereign.
