
Brunel - A Man of Vision

Son of French born Marc Isambard Brunel and his English born wife Sophia who had met in France. They separated and both narrowly escaped the guillotine during the French Revolution. They eventually got together again in England, married and their son Isambard was born in 1806. After a good education Isambard started work in his father's Engineering Office and he was appointed Engineer to the Thames Tunnel, which was the start of an exceptional career which made a lasting impact on the world.

Mr Reginald Palk, STEAM Swindon
Reginald Palk MRICS FRSPH is a lifelong railway enthusiast. Now retired, he spent the majority of his working life as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with the Local Authority at Swindon. During this period Railway orientated work came his way, including the original GWR Museum and the modernisation of the Railway Village. Volunteer work included a Museum and a Station on the Talyllyn Railway in North Wales. During the Brunel 200 celebrations in 2006 his "Brunel" lectures and tours of the Railway Village were extremely popular.
