Bath awarded Buttle UK Quality Mark

The University is pleased to confirm that it has been awarded Buttle’s UK’s Quality Mark. The University’s successful application was the culmination of a concerted group effort led by the Widening Participation Office and a cross section of University staff from Faculties, Academic & Support Departments and the Students’ Union.

Buttle Trust Quality MarkButtle UK is named after Frank Buttle who set up a trust fund in1953 to help children and young people in need across the UK. The Quality Mark is awarded to higher education providers who demonstrate their commitment to young people in and leaving care. It recognises the important work which universities do to encourage care leavers to go on to Higher Education and the on-going support which is available to them throughout their studies.

Susan Mueller, Quality Mark Manager, Buttle UK said, "We are extremely pleased to be able to award the Buttle UK Quality Mark for Care Leavers to the University of Bath. The Quality Mark recognises the commitment of the University to improving access to Higher Education of looked after children and care leavers. The University has demonstrated that they have strategies and processes in place to raise the aspirations of students from a care background to progress to Higher Education and to provide support to succeed in their studies once they have started on a course. I look forward to working with colleagues at the University of Bath to implement further developments across the institution and to share best practice over the three year duration of the Quality Mark award."

Dame Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, added, “The award reflects the hard work and commitment of both staff and students. All those staff involved should be very proud. We have been given this award for one year initially, after which our progress in a number of areas will be judged with a view to extending the Quality Mark for a further 2 years. So the hard work does not stop here as there are a number of initiatives which the University will have to undertake to retain this award.”

This Quality Mark is very timely given the work which is taking place within the Widening Participation Office to broaden the intake of students from differing backgrounds to the University and serves to demonstrate the University’s full commitment to widening participation.
