Bath plays host to thousands at local skills fair

The University of Bath recently played host at the extremely successful 'Have a Go' event. This event was organised by Bath and North East Somerset Council, City of Bath College and Norton Radstock College who along with the University of Bath; all play an integral role in the B&NES Learning and Skills Partnership.

Have a go event - University of Bath'Have a Go' provided over 1000 local secondary school children, college students and the recently unemployed, with a hands-on opportunity to try “bite size” tasters of different skills in a range of occupational settings. The overall aim of the event was to inspire young people to think about their future jobs, career path and study options as well as develop their understanding and preparation for the world of work.

Over 30 different training providers, employers and representatives from the voluntary sector were on hand at the University to provide innovative and exciting hands on skills taster opportunities. Visitors could try their hand at bricklaying, hairdressing, mixing music, caring for a baby, handling some unusual animals and creating renewable energy. Team Bath gave visitors the chance to test their fitness levels using a range of high tech equipment. A range of organisations were also on hand to offer Information Advice and Guidance sessions to individuals in the Advice Zone.

As well as playing host to the event the University provided information about university courses and a team of Student Ambassadors were on hand to help at the event.

Jacqui Buffton, Facilitator of B&NES Learning and Skills Partnership praised the support given by the University "Just to say ‘thank you’ for all the help the University gave for the ‘Have a Go’ event yesterday. It was a great success with over a 1,000 students attending in the day and a steady stream of parents with their children. It was a really good venue and as well as show-casing various vocational options, the fact that they all came to the University, should embed some Aimhigher aspirations as well. All your student ambassadors were terrific. I’m absolutely sure that the event will have changed young people’s lives for the better."

Annette Hayton, Head of Widening Participation added “This event was a tremendous success and provided a unique opportunity for students and parents to explore academic and vocational opportunities. The University is keen to engage with the local community through events such as 'Have a Go' and we were delighted to provide support from our student ambassadors.”
