Seminar title: Perceptions, Accessibility and Outcomes for vocational students in HE
Speaker: Ali Rouncefield-Swales, WVPC, University of Bath
Location: 8 West 2.8
Time: 12.30 -13.30pm
About this seminar
The Government’s commitment to widening participation in HE and the growth of the HE system has encouraged the development of a number of pathways to HE study. HE entrants now come from a wider range of backgrounds than previously and with a range of socially, economically and educationally diverse experiences. More vocationally qualified students are being encouraged to progress to HE, but numbers are still comparatively small and unevenly spread across the HE sector (Schwartz 2004). The number of Level 3 students with vocational qualifications accessing selective universities is low and this is perceived to be a major challenge for widening participation.
This seminar will share recent research into the FE and HE perception of selective universities and the accessibility of these institutions to BTEC Level 3 learners. The seminar also highlights national data about BTEC Level 3 learners in HE and the outcomes for these students graduating from HE.
Ali Rouncefield-Swales is an experienced widening participation researcher and
coordinator. She set up and managed the Aimhigher Healthcare Strand through its first few years of
infancy, has delivered projects for the Western Vocational Progression Consortium at the University
of Bath. Alison has conducted a range of research and evaluations into widening participation,
vocational participation and progression and in the wider field of learning and skills.
